ISLAMABAD Jared Goff Youth Jersey , July 3 (Xinhua) -- A five-member delegation of theU.S. Senate, headed by Senator John McCain, chairman of the SenateCommittee on Armed Services, visited Pakistan's South Waziristantribal region on Monday, the military said.

The delegation, accompanied by Pakistan Army Chief General QamarJaved Bajwa, was briefed about Pak-Afghan border security includingrecent measures for its improvement through fencing and enhancedsurveillance.

The U.S. senators were flown over the tribal area to have viewof the border area, newly constructed forts, posts and developmentworks including schools, colleges, hospitals, sports stadium, watersupply schemes and roads communication infrastructure, an armystatement said.

South Waziristan, which borders Afghanistan, has been cleared bythe security forces in major operation in 2009, of the Taliban andother armed groups.

"The delegation having seen the realities on ground acknowledgedefforts and sacrifices by Pakistan Army," the statement from theInter-Services Public Relations said.

The senators reiterated importance of institutionalizedPak-Afghan border security coordination and cooperation mechanism,it further said.

The U.S. delegation was scheduled to visit the Line of Control,the de facto border between Pakistan and India in Kashmir region,which couldn't get through due to bad weather, the army said.

Meanwhile Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday calledfor political solution to the Afghan problem in a meeting with thedelegation of the visiting U.S. senators, the Foreign Ministrysaid.

The prime minister underscored his government's commitment togood neighbourly relations and highlighted various initiatives toimprove relations with Afghanistan and India.

On Afghanistan, he reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment tosupporting all efforts aimed at lasting peace and stability inAfghanistan.

He said that concerted efforts were needed for a politicallynegotiated settlement under an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peaceprocess.

The prime minister called for a strong partnership between theUnited States, Afghanistan and Pakistan as a prerequisite forachieving sustainable peace in Afghanistan. In this regard, he alsostressed the importance of the Quadrilateral Coordination Groupmechanism to facilitate Afghan reconciliation.

Thanking the prime minister, Senator McCain agreed thatcontinued close cooperation between the United States and Pakistanis essential for securing peace and stability in the region, thestatement said.

He said that the United States attached importance to itsrelations with Pakistan, which remained a close friend.
